Neu Deutschland – Kristin Trüb

Raus, raus, raus und raus,
Aus Deutschland muss ich raus:
Ich schlag mir Deutschland aus dem Sinn
Und wandre jetzt nach Texas hin.
Mein Glück will ich probieren,
Marschieren.

Text: August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798–1874)

I guess i socialized a little bit more like a German. Very reserved and not as loud as the usual American.

Audrey is a member of the Saengerrunde in Austin - a traditional german singing group since 1852

I felt a little embarrassed because of my German background.

Alton and James Klier about their german roots. Their ancestors settled in Fredericksburg around 1849.

Doug Edwards runs the smokehouse in Fredericksburg. In 1947 "Opa´s smoked Meats" started as a small meat lockers and smokehouse. You still get meat according to German tradition, even if Doug developed the recipes. Preserving the legacy of good old Germany is very important to him.

A research work on the concept of culture using the example of Texas Germans. Around 1900, German immigrants formed the largest, most respected, and best organized foreign language ethnicity in the United States. Both world wars largely destroyed the parallel German-speaking world. Few minorities, like the Texas Germans, have preserved parts of their culture to the present day. The research was supported by a scholarship from the Ruhr Residence.
